THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A PERFECT CHURCH
Seriously...if you find one let us know.
While we don't claim to be perfect, we are striving to be more like Jesus, and below are 5 values that shape who we are as a church and who we aspire to be.
WE LOVE UNCONDITIONALLY
"Jesus never throws rocks, so we won't either."
A church can be a lonely place. It’s a weird paradigm if you think about it. A room full of people, and everybody seems “okay” but the reality is most of us are not. But in the person of Jesus we see an amazing paradigm where love is freely given regardless of circumstances. If Vertical is nothing else, we want to be known as a loving community, because God IS love.
WE ARE INDISPENSABLE TO OUR COMMUNITY
“Just because we have good news doesn’t mean we are good news.”
Luke 4:18-19: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, 19 and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.”
Simply put, our communities should be better because we are in them. Because of this, we place a high value on serving our community through the local schools and other places where “life happens.”
WE BUILD STRONG FAMILIES
“A family is simply a community of people on mission together.”
We were created for community.
We believe a healthy family/community:
Keeps Perspective – No one is greater then anyone else
Practices Presence – They are there for each other
Is Open-Handed – They look to give of themselves first
Lives with Purpose – They live for something bigger then themselves
WE PRACTICE GENEROSITY
“While it is possible to give without loving, it is not possible to love without giving.”
God loved the world so much that He gave His very best to save it. In response to the gift and sacrifice of Jesus we desire to be a church that gives of our time, talents, and treasures back to God through the local church and through our lives. We believe the more generous we are, the more we look like Jesus.
WE GO DEEP
“Depth is not measured by knowledge, but by obedience.”
There is always a next step in the journey of following Jesus. The more we know Him, the more our identity becomes rooted in Him. We don’t believe the depth of a church can be measured by the amount of information a pastor gives in a Sunday morning sermon, but by the way the people of that community live out the ways of Jesus. We desire to be a church that creates environments where we can be reminded of our identity in Christ and shown how to live that out in real life.
